The rush to Leadville was on in 1879, as prospectors hurried
to stake a claim in one of the richest mining districts in the nation-
The city had incorporated only a year earlier, named after the heavy,
black sand that had been tossed aside by earlier gold seekers.
By 1880, the sand - a carbonate of lead laden with silver -
had transformed the sleepy mining camp into a boom town. Today, more than a century
later, thousands still flock to Leadville, attracted by its rich history, fun-filled
events and activities, and some of the most spectacular mountain scenery in the
world. The highest incorporated city in North America (elevation 10,430 feet) stands at
the hub of the Top of the Rockies Scenic and Historic Byway.
Despite its mountainous

locale, the area is easily accessed year- round on state
and federal highways. An authentic mountain community, Leadville is an affordable
alternative to hurried, pre- packaged vacations. History buffs and outdoor enthusiasts
alike can set their own pace, taking time to appreciate the area's beauty and enjoy
the hospitality of its residents.
The city has maintained its heritage and includes a National Historic Landmark
District. In Addition to Victorian architecture and a well preserved mining
district, visitors can also discover Leadville's rich history at several local museums
and many other points of interest..
